Studies on the Antigens of Sallmonella Typhi and Shigella Flexneri by Means of Fluorescent Antibody Technique

Abstract
The fluorescent antibody technique is one of recently developed and widely applied immunol-ogical techniques. The antigens of Salmonella typhi and Shigella flexneri were studied by means of this technique, and the following results were obtained.
1. Antigens of S. typhi were demonstrated with high specificity, and the characteristics of antigens, especially of H and Vi antigens, can be demonstrated more clearly than the agglu-tination.
2. For the antigens of Sh. flexneri, the activity of antigens were a .little lower with this method than the agglutination, but the reaction of fluorescent antibody technique was fully specific.
3. The cross reaction between Sh. flexneri and Escherichia coli was observed by this method as in case of the agglutination.
4. The nature of antigens active in the fluo-resce:nt antibody technique was . discussed in relation with immunoglobulins.
